What's Good

Custom Open WebUI License (BSD-shaped + branding rules; open-webui/open-webui). Polished chat UI for local and remote models, document RAG, tools/functions, RBAC, and broad vector-store options. Docs at docs.openwebui.com. Massive adoption — ★153,481 on GitHub 2026-09-29.

The Catch

Branding lock — removing “Open WebUI” marks is forbidden above ~50 end users / 30 days without written permission or enterprise license (not OSI MIT/Apache). Vs LibreChat (MIT Agents/MCP/skills orchestration UI): LibreChat leans Agents/MCP/skills; Open WebUI leans Ollama-first chat+RAG+admin. You still BYO models, GPU, and upgrade discipline.

Verdict

Source-available Ollama/OpenAI chat UI when polished local RAG chat beats building one — branding rules are the Catch vs LibreChat MIT.
