What's Good
Apache-2.0. typst/typst. Markup + scripting, incremental compiles, serious math/bib support, and a local CLI that is enough to ship PDFs. Friendly errors versus TeX log archaeology. Docs at typst.app/docs.
The Catch
typst.app collaborative cloud is a separate product with its own free/paid seats — the compiler CLI here is the OSS gem. Vs Pandoc/Quarto and vs LaTeX: smaller package ecosystem and different mental model; migration is a rewrite, not a flag. Not a slide tool.
Verdict
Apache-2.0 typesetter. Free CLI forever; use when docs should compile fast and the cloud editor is optional.
