## The Hook

ToolJet builds admin panels, dashboards and internal apps on top of your existing databases, APIs and SaaS tools with a drag-and-drop editor, and it now ships an MCP server so a coding agent can generate and edit ToolJet apps.

## What's Good

AGPL-3.0 community edition (ToolJet/ToolJet), release v3.20.246-lts (2026-10-15). The free edition includes the visual builder with 80+ components, a built-in database, multi-page apps with multiplayer editing, 90+ data sources, JavaScript and Python inside apps, SSO, and self-hosting on Docker, Kubernetes or the main clouds. Plugins and connectors are built with the ToolJet CLI, and LTS releases get security and bug fixes. ★~41k.

## The Catch

The AI features (app generation, AI query builder, agent builder) are Enterprise, and the README's quick-start Docker image is the enterprise LTS build, so check what you are running. The MCP server is in beta. AGPL-3.0 matters if you modify it and offer it as a service. Appsmith is the closest alternative.

## Verdict

A solid self-hosted Retool alternative — pick the community edition knowingly.
