## The Hook

Tabby is the self-hosted Copilot-shaped assistant when you want completion + answer engine on your own box, not another SaaS seat.

## What's Good

Apache-2.0 core. Self-host with consumer GPUs, no external DBMS required for the community path. VS Code / Neovim / JetBrains clients. Code completion, answer engine, and inline chat against models you run. Community plan is free self-onboarding.

## The Catch

Vs Continue (IDE assistant) and Ollama (model runtime): Tabby is the self-host *assistant server*, not just weights and not a cloud agent seat. `ee/` is separately licensed — Team/Enterprise features are not the Apache core. You own GPU, upgrades, and model quality.

## Verdict

Apache-2.0 self-host coding assistant. Free forever community core; pay only when you need the ee/ team SKUs.
