## The Hook

SWR is a React hooks library for data fetching based on stale-while-revalidate: it shows cached data first, refetches in the background, and updates the UI when fresh data arrives.

## What's Good

MIT (vercel/swr), release v2.5.1 (2026-08-12). One hook handles caching, request deduplication, revalidation on focus and reconnect, pagination and mutation. Works with any transport (fetch, GraphQL, etc.). Maintained by Vercel and widely used with Next.js. ★~32.5k.

## The Catch

Smaller than TanStack Query in features like devtools and fine cache control. With React Server Components, much fetching moves to the server, so you need SWR less in new Next.js apps.

## Verdict

The light, simple choice for client-side fetching in React.
