Serena is the IDE-for-your-agent: symbol-level retrieve, edit, and refactor over MCP.

## What's Good

MIT. Free MCP server + free LSP backend by default — find_symbol / insert_after_symbol style tools, not line-number thrash. Complements coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor) instead of replacing them. Language-server abstraction across many stacks.

## The Catch

Complements agents; it is not a turnkey SWE loop. JetBrains plugin backend is paid optional (free trial) — LSP path stays free. Symbol quality tracks whatever language server you wire.
