## The Hook

rclone is rsync for cloud storage when the remote is S3, Drive, or SFTP and you need sync/copy/mount from one binary.

## What's Good

MIT. rclone/rclone. Go CLI: sync, copy, check, mount, and serve across 70+ backends (S3, Drive, B2, SFTP, local, …). Docs at rclone.org; source github.com/rclone/rclone. The default “move files to a remote” tool.

## The Catch

Vs restic (encrypted *backup snapshots*) and Garage (self-host *S3 store*): rclone is the *sync/transfer* client, not a backup vault with client-side encryption-by-default and not an object store you run. Encryption/crypt remote is optional and easy to get wrong. You still own credentials, rate limits, and the dest bill.

## Verdict

MIT cloud rsync. Free forever; sync remotes — restic if you need encrypted snapshots.
