## The Hook

PrivateBin is a minimalist pastebin where the server never sees the content: pastes are encrypted and decrypted in the browser with 256-bit AES-GCM, and the key lives in the URL fragment.

## What's Good

Zlib/libpng license for the core (bundled libraries under their own MIT, BSD, GPLv2 and Apache terms), release 2.0.6 (2026-08-08). A fork of ZeroBin, maintained since 2016. Optional passwords, burn-after-reading, expiry, discussions and file attachments. A small PHP app that runs on cheap hosting or Docker. ★~8.7k.

## The Catch

Users still have to trust the server not to serve malicious JavaScript, so it must run over HTTPS with HSTS. Anyone with the full link can read a paste without a password. PHP is a deliberate choice; it is not a Go single binary.

## Verdict

The simplest way to share secrets and logs without trusting the host with the plaintext.
