## The Hook

Pay is a Rails engine that gives your models one billing API on top of Stripe, Paddle, Braintree and Lemon Squeezy: customers, charges, subscriptions and webhooks stored in your own database.

## What's Good

MIT (pay-rails/pay), release v12.3.0 (2026-10-06), maintained since 2017. One interface across Stripe (SCA-compatible), Paddle, Braintree and Lemon Squeezy, plus a fake processor for free plans and trials without cards. Syncs records through webhooks so you can query billing state with ActiveRecord. ★~2.3k.

## The Catch

Rails only. It wraps processor APIs instead of hiding them, so advanced Stripe features still need the Stripe gem directly. Switching processors later still involves real migration work.

## Verdict

The obvious starting point for subscription billing in a Rails app.
