## The Hook

OpenSpec is spec-driven change tooling for AI coding assistants — agree on the change before the agent writes the code.

## What's Good

MIT (Fission-AI/OpenSpec). Lightweight SDD workflow: propose → apply → archive with `/opsx:*` slash commands and a CLI (`@fission-ai/openspec`). Aligns humans and coding agents on proposal/specs/design/tasks before implementation. Site at openspec.dev; huge adoption (~69k★). Works across Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and many other agent hosts.

## The Catch

Needs an AI coding-agent host — OpenSpec is tooling around the agent, not a product that ships code by itself. Vs Spec Kit (heavier phase-gated SDD): OpenSpec is lighter and more iterate-friendly, still not a standalone SaaS. You still pay (or self-host) the coding agent that runs the slash commands.

## Verdict

MIT spec-driven agent tooling. Align before code; host agent required — not a product alone.
