## The Hook

Native SDK builds desktop apps from TypeScript and its own Native markup, compiling the app logic and views into a native executable that draws its UI in real OS windows — no bundled Chromium and no system webview unless you choose to embed web content.

## What's Good

Apache-2.0 (vercel-labs/native), release v0.11.0 (2026-10-13). npm install -g @native-sdk/cli, then native init, native dev (markup hot reload that keeps app state), native check, native test and native build. Apps follow an Elm-style model: typed messages go to an update function, and file, network and process work run as effects in TypeScript services. macOS, Windows and Linux are full desktop hosts with menus, system notifications, packaging and an automation API to inspect and drive a running app; you can write the core in Zig instead. ★~7.8k.

## The Catch

Labeled a Vercel Labs experiment, and nearly all commits come from one person. App cores are a checked subset of TypeScript, not the full language, and the core's frame arena and model heap default to a fixed 1 MiB each (overflow is a runtime panic). It needs Node.js 24+ and a pinned Zig toolchain. iOS and Android are experimental. Vs Tauri or Electron: far fewer components and libraries to lean on, so expect to build more yourself. Stars have grown fast (about 330 a week since the repo opened in May 2026), so judge it on a trial run, not the count.

## Verdict

Worth a weekend if you want a truly native desktop app from TypeScript — not yet for a product you must support for years.
