## The Hook

Gogs is a simple, stable self-hosted Git service: one Go binary gives you repositories over SSH and HTTPS, issues, pull requests, wikis and webhooks on almost any machine.

## What's Good

MIT (gogs/gogs), release v0.14.3 (2026-06-07), around since 2014. Runs on Linux, macOS, Windows and ARM with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB or SQLite. Supports Git LFS, deploy keys, protected branches, repository mirroring and migration, and auth via SMTP, LDAP, reverse proxy or GitHub with 2FA. Very low resource use. ★~47.9k.

## The Catch

Development is slower and more conservative than its fork Gitea/Forgejo, and there are no built-in CI runners or package registry. The API is still described as experimental. Release cadence is a few per year.

## Verdict

Still the lightest way to host Git yourself — choose Forgejo or Gitea if you need CI and packages.
