## The Hook

Gitea is the lightweight self-hosted GitHub: one Go binary or Docker image gives you Git hosting, code review, issues, kanban, wiki, a package registry and CI that reuses GitHub Actions workflows.

## What's Good

MIT (go-gitea/gitea), release v28.1.0 (2026-10-06). Runs on Linux, macOS, Windows and BSDs across x86, ARM and RISC-V, happily on a small VPS or a Raspberry Pi. Official `tea` CLI, Go SDK and act-based runner. Free gitea.com accounts (limited repositories) and a public demo at demo.gitea.com. ★~58k.

## The Catch

Governance first: in 2022 the trademark and domains moved to the for-profit Gitea Ltd, which sells Gitea Cloud and an enterprise edition; that is why the community forked Forgejo. You run it, you own backups, upgrades and runner security — Actions compatibility is good but not complete, so some marketplace actions need tweaks. Vs forgejo (GPLv3+ community fork, runs Codeberg): same roots, pick Gitea for MIT and the larger ecosystem, Forgejo for community governance.

## Verdict

The default self-hosted Git forge when you want GitHub-style workflows on your own box — MIT, but company-steered.
