## The Hook

Fabric is a Go command-line tool that runs named prompts (patterns) over whatever you pipe in, such as a transcript, an article or a log, so a task like extract_wisdom or summarize becomes one shell command instead of a pasted prompt.

## What's Good

MIT (danielmiessler/Fabric), very active (release v1.4.523, 2026-10-16). About 260 patterns ship in data/patterns, and you can add your own as plain markdown. It works with many providers, including Ollama for local models and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and lets you pick a model per pattern. fabric --serve exposes the same patterns as a REST API with Swagger docs. Installs with brew install fabric-ai, winget, go install or Docker. ★~44.3k.

## The Catch

It is a prompt runner, not an agent: one pattern in, one completion out, with no tools or loop. Pattern quality varies, and many target writing, research or personal reflection rather than code. You bring your own provider key and pay its token costs. The quick-start installer is a curl | bash script, so read it first or use brew or go install. The star count has climbed quickly (about 300 a week since Jan 2024), so weigh it by the patterns you actually use, not the number.

## Verdict

The cleanest way to turn your best prompts into shell commands — keep the few patterns that fit and write your own.
