## The Hook

The Exa MCP server gives an agent Exa’s AI search engine: web search that returns clean page content, page fetching, and optional advanced search and research agents.

## What's Good

MIT (exa-labs/exa-mcp-server). Connect to the hosted endpoint or run it locally; default tools cover search and fetching pages as markdown, and more tools can be enabled per connection.

## The Catch

The hosted server works without a key but is rate-limited; higher limits and Exa Agent need an Exa API key or OAuth, and usage beyond that is paid. It searches and reads pages you point it at — for crawling whole sites, use a crawler such as Firecrawl. There are no GitHub releases.

## Verdict

A clean search-and-read MCP for agents — get a key once you outgrow the anonymous limits.
