## The Hook

dive is how you see *why* an image is fat — layer filesystem diffs and wasted space before you push another 1.4 GB “slim” build.

## What's Good

MIT. wagoodman/dive. Analyze image tags/ids/digests or `dive build` straight from a Dockerfile context. Shows per-layer file trees, efficiency estimates, and discoverable bloat. Runnable as a local binary or via `docker run` mounting the Docker socket.

## The Catch

Vs Trivy/Grype (vuln scanners) and Syft (SBOM generator, not yet a twin page here): dive is *size/layer forensics*, not CVEs or SBOMs. Needs Docker/OCI image access. CI integration is DIY compared to scanner SaaS.

## Verdict

MIT image layer explorer. Free forever; run it before you blame the registry for your Dockerfile.
