## The Hook

Backrest is a web interface and scheduler on top of restic: create or import repositories, schedule backups and maintenance with cron, browse snapshots and restore files from a browser.

## What's Good

GPL-3.0 (garethgeorge/backrest), release v1.14.1 (2026-07-12). A single Go binary for Linux, macOS, Windows and FreeBSD, or Docker; restic is downloaded automatically on first run. It schedules prune, check and forget, runs pre/post hooks, sends notifications to Discord, Slack, Shoutrrr, Gotify or Healthchecks, and supports every restic backend plus rclone remotes. ★~7.7k.

## The Catch

It is a wrapper, so restic's model (and its repository format) is what you are really adopting. It manages backups on the machine it runs on; it is not a central server for a fleet. Mostly a single-maintainer project.

## Verdict

The friendliest way to run restic on a NAS or server — restic underneath, so your backups stay portable.
