## The Hook

Authgear is an open-source consumer authentication platform with pre-built login and account pages, passwordless, passkeys, biometrics and 2FA, available self-hosted or as a cloud service.

## What's Good

Apache-2.0 (authgear/authgear-server), release 2026-10-08.0. Passwordless login via magic link or OTP over email, SMS or WhatsApp, passkeys, biometric login on iOS and Android, TOTP/SMS/email 2FA, audit logs, brute-force protection and rate limits, plus SDKs and an admin portal. Built for SaaS products and multi-app ecosystems. ★~2.1k.

## The Catch

Self-hosting is a multi-service setup (Go servers, Postgres, Redis and more), and docs lean toward Authgear Cloud. Smaller community than Keycloak or Zitadel. SMS and WhatsApp OTP need your own provider and its costs.

## Verdict

A polished consumer-auth stack you can self-host — compare it with Zitadel first.
