## The Hook

Atuin replaces Ctrl-R with searchable, context-rich shell history — sync encrypted if you want.

## What's Good

MIT Rust CLI. SQLite history with exit code, duration, cwd. Works across bash/zsh/fish/etc. Optional end-to-end encrypted sync via hosted server or self-hosted `atuin-server`. Local-only mode needs no account.

## The Catch

Shell history tool — not a prompt (Starship), not a jumper (zoxide), not Dotfiles sync. Desktop/Hub team features are a separate product line (Hub not self-hostable). Atuin AI is free while in testing — treat that as temporary.

## Verdict

MIT shell history. Free forever CLI + self-host sync; hosted sync stays optional.
