Storage for Multi-platform
Storage tools that run on Multi-platform. The Catch for each, not a winner list.

- GarageAGPL-3.0 S3-compatible store for small geo-distributed hosts
AGPL. S3-compatible for small/geo-distributed self-host — not SeaweedFS/Ceph/MinIO-scale. SeaweedFS omitted once this publishes. Stretch: object store outside core remit, kept for the free forever self-host bar.
- rcloneMIT rsync for cloud remotes — 70+ storage backends
Vs restic (encrypted *backup snapshots*) and Garage (self-host *S3 store*): rclone is the *sync/transfer* client, not a backup vault with client-side encryption-by-default and not an object store you run. Encryption/crypt remote is optional and easy to get wrong. You still own credentials, rate limits, and the dest bill.
- RustFSApache-2.0 Rust S3-compatible object store
Vs MinIO / Garage / Ceph RGW: RustFS is a MinIO-class S3 object store in Rust with Apache-2.0 licensing angle — not a CDN and not managed blob SaaS. S3 compatibility matrices always have gaps; validate your client SDK before a cutover. You own HA, disks, and ops.
- FileBrowser QuantumApache-2.0 self-hosted web file manager — the maintained fork now that File Browser is archived
Not a drop-in upgrade from the original File Browser: configuration moved to `config.yaml` and the fork differs heavily, so plan a migration rather than swapping the image. v2.0.0 is in beta — pin a release. It is a web file manager, not a sync platform: no desktop or mobile sync clients like Nextcloud or Syncthing. Still put it behind TLS and your own auth when it faces the internet. If you are still on the archived upstream, upstream itself tells you to treat it as unmaintained.
